Honoring the Families Behind the Fallen

Behind every fallen warrior is a family forever changed – a parent who still sets a place at the table, a spouse who answers the same questions about their children’s dad, a child growing up with a hero they’ll never fully know. These are Gold Star Families, and they are at the heart of everything the Marine Raider Foundation does.

What Is a Gold Star Family?

The term “Gold Star” dates back to World War I, when American families hung service flags in their windows — a blue star for each family member serving, and a gold star sewn over a blue one when that service member was killed in action. The gold star became a symbol of the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, Gold Star Families are the parents, spouses, children, and siblings of service members who died in the line of duty. They live with a loss that cannot be measured, a loss that doesn’t diminish with time, but reshapes itself around the milestones their loved one will never share.

Remembering Our Fallen Marine Raiders

Since 2007, MARSOC has lost 48 heroes — men of extraordinary skill, dedication, and character. They came from every corner of the country. They were sons and brothers, fathers and friends. They chose to serve at the tip of the spear, volunteering for some of the most dangerous missions our nation asks of its warriors.

Their names and stories are preserved at marineraiderfoundation.org/fallenheroes — a tribute to the men who gave everything. Each profile is a reminder that behind every statistic is a person: a life fully lived, a community that misses them, and a family carrying their memory forward every single day.

The Marine Raider Foundation believes that honoring these fallen heroes means more than building memorials. It means showing up for the people they loved, year after year, in the good moments and the difficult ones.

“As if it were not enough that the Marine Raider Foundation was there from the beginning of our grieving, they are still with us today. The Marine Raider Foundation was our backbone in our hardest and most trying time as a family, and still is today.”

The Annual Resiliency & Remembrance Event

Since 2015, the Marine Raider Foundation has hosted an Annual Gold Star Family Resiliency & Remembrance Event, a multi-day gathering that brings together the families of all 48 fallen Marine Raiders. It is one of the most meaningful things the Foundation does.

The event is warm, informal, and intentionally unhurried. There are no speeches, no need to explain who you are or why you are there. Every person in the room already understands. That shared understanding is something Gold Star Families describe as profoundly healing.

Throughout the weekend, families share meals together, participate in activities like morning yoga, Paint & Sip, and spend a day with the Raider Command at MARSOC, a connection to the community their loved one was part of. The Foundation covers 100% of the cost: every flight, every hotel room, every meal.

“What I liked about the event was getting to see family and newfound friends — tragedy brought us together — and sharing that commonality. Not having to explain the story and just be ourselves.”

— Gold Star Family Member

In 2025, 174 Gold Star Family members attended — parents, spouses, siblings, and children of the fallen. This year we will have over 180 family members joining us.

How You Can Help

This event is made possible entirely through the generosity of donors, sponsors, and supporters who believe that Gold Star Families deserve to be seen, supported, and celebrated. Every contribution sends a message that their loved one’s sacrifice is remembered.

The Foundation’s Gold Star Family Wish List makes giving simple and direct. A $250 gift covers a hotel room. A $50 gift covers a welcome bag, a $500 gift covers a flight. A $2,500 gift sponsors a Gold Star Family member’s full attendance, including travel, accommodations, and meals. Gold Star Family Event Wish List

For organizations and businesses looking to make a larger impact, sponsorship opportunities range from $5,000 to $25,000 and include meaningful recognition throughout the event weekend. To learn more about sponsorship, contact jmcandrews@marineraiderfoundation.org.
